Stand-out is the distance the blade can be extended horizontally without buckling. A 25 mm blade typically stands out 2–3 m. Higher-quality tapes use blade coatings (nylon or polyester) for wear resistance and graduated markings dimensionally printed on the blade.
A spirit level uses a sealed glass or acrylic vial (called a bubble vial) partially filled with liquid to indicate horizontal (level) or vertical (plumb) orientation.
Types:
Accuracy is typically 0.5 mm per meter (0.006 in/ft). Better-quality levels use machined aluminum or magnesium frames with milled vials. Vials should be checked periodically against a known flat reference.

A speed square (also called a rafter square) is a compact triangular square approximately 18 cm (7 in) on a side. It combines a protractor, try square, and miter square in one tool. Markings include common rafter tables (rise per foot of run) and degree markings for angle cuts.
The speed square is commonly used for marking 90° and 45° cuts on lumber, laying out rafters by scribing along the pivot point, and as a saw guide for circular saws.
A chalk line consists of a length of string stored in a container filled with powdered chalk. The string is stretched taut between two points and snapped to leave a straight chalk line on the work surface.
