A splitting maul is a heavy, wedge-shaped striking tool designed specifically for splitting firewood rounds. It combines the mass of a sledgehammer with the wedge action of an axe.
The splitting maul has a large, wedge-shaped head with a flared profile that progressively widens behind the cutting edge. This geometry produces a wedging action that forces wood fibers apart as the head penetrates. The head is made of forged steel with a hardened carbon steel edge.

The poll (back face) of the head is flat and serves as a striking face for driving wedges or striking a splitting wedge.
The splitting maul differs from an axe in several important respects. The maul is heavier (3–4 kg vs 1.5–2.5 kg for a felling axe). The maul's wedge is wider, producing more splitting force and less cutting action. The maul's thicker blade edge is more resistant to damage from striking knots and dirty wood. A maul is intended for splitting with the grain, not cutting across it.
The user positions the round on a flat, stable surface (traditionally a splitting block). The maul is swung in a controlled arc, aiming the blade at existing cracks or the center of the round. The user should maintain a stable stance with feet shoulder-width apart, keeping the swing path clear. For large rounds, the maul can be driven into the round, then lifted and dropped together with the round onto a hard surface to force the split.
For very large or stringy rounds, a sledgehammer and steel splitting wedges may be more effective than a maul alone. Wedges can be driven into cracks created by the maul to expand the split. A maul with a splitting wedge used in combination handles rounds that neither tool alone can split.
Hickory is traditional for maul handles, valued for its shock absorption and fatigue resistance. Fiberglass handles offer greater durability and weather resistance but transmit more vibration. Handles should be inspected regularly for cracks, splinters, or looseness.
Splitting mauls generate significant force. Users should wear eye protection against wood chips and steel fragments. The work area should be clear of bystanders. The maul head should be checked for looseness before each use. A loose head on a 3-kg maul is extremely dangerous. Never swing a maul when fatigued.
