The Shorthorn breed originated in the 18th century in the counties of Durham, Northumberland, and York in northern England. The breed's foundation was the native Teeswater cattle of the region, improved through selective breeding by the Colling brothers, Charles and Robert, in the late 1700s. The first Shorthorns were dual-purpose animals, providing both milk and beef. The breed was imported to the United States beginning in 1783, making it the earliest improved British breed to reach North America.
The first purebred cattle registry in the United States was established in 1846 specifically for Shorthorns. The breed's popularity was immense in the 19th century, with Shorthorns dominating American cattle production through the 1870s. The Milking Shorthorn was recognized as a distinct dairy strain in the early 20th century, and the American Milking Shorthorn Society was formed in 1912. The breed declined in the mid-20th century as Holsteins became the dominant dairy breed, but Milking Shorthorns were upgraded to a pure dairy breed in the 1960s and have maintained a niche in the grass-based and organic dairy sectors.
Milking Shorthorns are medium-sized cattle with a typical dairy conformation: angular, with good udder capacity and sound feet and legs. The breed is recognizable by its red, red-and-white, or roan coat. Roan, a mixture of red and white hairs producing a pinkish-gray color, is the signature color of the Shorthorn family. Mature cows weigh 1,200 to 1,400 pounds (540 to 635 kilograms), and bulls weigh 1,800 to 2,200 pounds (815 to 1,000 kilograms). Both horned and polled varieties exist.
A Milking Shorthorn cow produces 14,000 to 18,000 pounds (6,400 to 8,200 liters) of milk per lactation, with butterfat content of 3.5 to 3.8 percent and protein content of 3.2 to 3.4 percent. The breed is known for its exceptional fertility, easy calving, and longevity, with many cows remaining productive into their 12th year and beyond.
