The Texel (pronounced tel-sell) is a Dutch meat sheep breed originating from the island of Texel in the Wadden Sea, off the northern coast of the Netherlands. The breed is distinguished by its heavily muscled carcass, particularly the exceptional development of the hindquarter and loin, which has made it one of the most influential terminal sire breeds in Europe and an increasingly significant breed worldwide. Texels are the dominant sheep breed in the Netherlands, where they represent approximately 70 percent of the national sheep population.
The Texel breed was developed on the island of Texel during the 19th century by crossing native Texel sheep with imported breeds including the Leicester Longwool and the Lincoln. The native Texel sheep were small, hardy animals adapted to the island's salt-marsh grazing, and the infusion of British longwool blood added size and improved conformation. The result was a medium-sized sheep with an exceptionally muscular carcass, a trait that was refined through intensive selection through the 20th century.
The breed was officially recognized in the Netherlands in 1909 with the establishment of the Texel Sheep Breeders' Association. Texels were exported to the United Kingdom in the 1970s, where they were initially viewed with skepticism by British farmers accustomed to the Suffolk and Hampshire as terminal sires. However, the breed's superior carcass composition, particularly the higher percentage of lean meat in the high-value cuts, quickly won acceptance. The British Texel Sheep Society was formed in 1973.
The breed's reputation was significantly enhanced in the 1980s and 1990s through carcass classification studies conducted by the UK Meat and Livestock Commission. Texel-cross lambs consistently graded higher in conformation scores than equivalent Suffolk and Charollais crosses, commanding a premium of 5 to 8 percent per carcass. The breed was imported to the United States in 1985, where it gained a foothold among producers targeting the premium lamb market. The United States Texel Sheep Association was founded in 1990.
Texel sheep are medium-sized with a distinctive muscular conformation. The body is deep and heavily muscled, with especially well-developed loins and hindquarters. The head is broad and clean, without wool on the face, and the ears are horizontal to slightly drooping. The face and legs are white with occasional gray or blueish markings permitted in the breed standard. Mature rams weigh 200 to 250 pounds (90 to 115 kilograms), and ewes weigh 160 to 200 pounds (70 to 90 kilograms).
The fleece is medium wool with a fiber diameter of 28 to 33 microns and a staple length of 3 to 5 inches (8 to 13 centimeters). Annual fleece weight is moderate at 5 to 7 pounds (2.3 to 3.2 kilograms). The wool is used in the production of medium-grade textiles and yarns, though fleece quality receives lower priority than meat traits in most Texel breeding programs.
A distinctive physiological feature of the Texel breed is the double-muscling phenotype present in a proportion of the population. This trait, associated with a mutation in the myostatin gene known as the Texel Muscling QTL, results in enhanced muscle fiber hypertrophy and a higher lean-to-fat ratio in the carcass. The double-muscling is most pronounced in the hindquarter, giving Texel-cross lambs an advantage in cut weight for high-value roasts and chops.
Texels are used primarily as terminal sires, particularly for producing lambs destined for the premium and organic lamb markets. The breed's consistently superior carcass conformation, high dressing percentage, and excellent meat-to-bone ratio have made it the terminal sire of choice in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and increasingly in the United States.
On homesteads, a Texel ram used over a commercial ewe flock will produce lambs that finish at a higher carcass grade and command a premium per pound compared to lambs sired by less specialized meat breeds. Texel-cross lambs gain weight efficiently, reaching market weight on forage-based systems with minimal concentrate supplementation. The breed's adaptability means it performs well in both intensive and extensive management systems.
Texel ewes have good maternal instincts and adequate milk production for singles and twins. The breed exhibits a strong lambing ease relative to body size, and the lambs are moderately vigorous at birth. The birth weight of Texel lambs is average for the breed's size, but the muscled shoulders of purebred Texel lambs can occasionally present challenges during delivery. This is rarely an issue when Texel rams are used over crossbred ewes.
Texels thrive on a variety of forage types, from improved pasture to less productive grazing, reflecting their island origins on salt-marsh vegetation. They are relatively efficient converters of forage to lean muscle, a trait that works well on pasture-based systems. The breed is hardy in temperate climates but does not tolerate extreme heat as well as hair sheep breeds.
The medium-wool fleece requires annual shearing. Standard health management includes parasite control, foot care, and vaccination for clostridial diseases.
