An off-grid cabin is a dwelling that operates independently of public utility infrastructure, generating its own power, collecting its own water, and managing its own waste. Off-grid cabins range from small seasonal hunting cabins to full-time residences with modern amenities. The design of an off-grid cabin integrates energy efficiency, water management, and waste treatment from the planning stage, as retrofitting these systems is more difficult and expensive than incorporating them from the start.
The cabin is oriented to maximize passive solar gain, with the majority of windows facing south in the northern hemisphere. The building envelope is highly insulated, with R-40 or greater in walls and R-60 in ceilings for cold climates. Earth-berming, where soil is banked against the north and west walls, reduces heat loss and stabilizes interior temperatures. The floor plan is compact, typically 40 to 80 square meters (400 to 800 square feet) for a one-bedroom cabin, to minimize heating and energy demands.
Electricity is provided by Solar PV panels with battery storage, typically a 1 to 3 kilowatt system for a basic cabin. A backup generator provides power during extended cloudy periods. Water is collected from the roof via Rainwater Catchment systems or drawn from a well. Wastewater is handled by a composting toilet and greywater system. Heating is provided by a wood stove, which also serves as a cooking surface and heat source for domestic hot water.
Off-grid cabins are often built using Timber Framing or conventional stud framing, with the exterior finished in metal roofing, cedar siding, or log siding. The Concrete Foundation type depends on soil conditions and frost depth: pier foundations are common for small cabins, while full basements or frost walls are used for larger structures. The cabin is typically built on a remote site, so materials are chosen for durability and ease of transport.
