A barn is a multi-purpose agricultural building used for housing livestock, storing feed and equipment, and processing farm products. Barn design must accommodate the specific needs of the intended use, including animal housing, hay and grain storage, vehicle access, and workspace. The three main barn types on homesteads are pole barns, post-frame barns, and Timber Framing-framed barns.
Pole barns are the most common and economical barn type. Pressure-treated poles are set directly into the ground or on Concrete Foundation piers, supporting a roof structure with metal or wood framing. The walls are typically metal siding. This design is fast to construct and requires minimal foundation work. A 12 by 18 meter (40 by 60 foot) pole barn is adequate for a small homestead with livestock.
Post-frame barns use a concrete foundation with anchor bolts for the structural posts, providing a longer service life than pole barns. The foundation prevents moisture wicking into the wood. These barns can be insulated and finished for workshop or living space.
Timber-framed barns use traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery with heavy timber beams. These are labor-intensive and expensive to build but offer exceptional durability, with many historic examples still standing after 200 years. Modern timber framing uses engineered joinery with metal fasteners.
A livestock barn includes a central aisle 3.0 to 4.5 meters (10 to 15 feet) wide for vehicle access, flanked by stalls or pens. The hayloft or hay storage area must be fire-resistant, as spontaneous combustion of damp hay is a known hazard. Hay storage requires 2.5 cubic meters (90 cubic feet) per tonne of baled hay. The barn floor in livestock areas is typically concrete with a textured finish, sloped 2 percent toward drainage channels. Ventilation is critical for animal health and is provided by ridge vents, cupolas, and sidewall openings.
Barns are oriented with the ridge line running north-south to maximize solar exposure on the roof for future solar panel installation. The barn should be located on high ground with good drainage, accessible to vehicles, and oriented away from prevailing winter winds. Access to utilities, including Livestock Watering, electricity, and internet, is considered in siting.
